Keratoconus - Intacs®

Keratoconus is a visually disabling condition of an exaggerated corneal curvature usually affecting young adults. Dr. Gulani provides all levels of specialized care for this condition and provides access to national networks and support groups for the same. He teaches his full spectrum service for Keratoconus, which has helped numerous patients.

Keratoconus is an eye condition named after the Greek Terms "kerato," meaning cornea, and "conus," meaning cone. Keratoconus causes the cornea to become cone shaped and thinner, disrupting the visual function. Keratoconus, is characterized by abnormal corneal change in which the cornea gradually becomes thinned and conical, affects approximately one in 2000 people in the United States.

Soft contact lenses can improve vision in the early stages of keratoconus. As the condition progresses, rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses may be needed. Until now, if RGP contacts became difficult to wear, a corneal transplantation was the last resort.

Intacs® is a FDA-approved procedure for patients with keratoconus. Intacs® can improve vision and reduce the distortion caused by keratoconus. The procedure involves placement of two tiny cylinders within the periphery of the cornea. These segments, which can be removed or exchanged and help maintain a more natural corneal shape to restore vision. Insertion of Intacs® is an outpatient procedure, which has proven effective for thousands of patients.

In my book, Dr. Gulani is No. 1, too. He corrected Priscilla's vision off the charts.

Dr. Gulani, Thank you for care you have provided during my recent surgery and recovery period.

I find my-self getting better vision all of the time. I realize this procedure is more difficult for someone with keratoconus and I sure have had my ups and downs and anxieties. The atmosphere at the institute is very supportive as are you. I know that my vision probably won’t be 20/20 uncorrected but the prospect of a much lesser prescription and the ability to wear contact lenses comfortably is worth all the trouble. The ability to wake-up at night and not need my glasses to get around is comforting.

I believe that you have the skill and various necessary techniques and abilities to help me achieve the best vision possible. Thanks Again!!!

My vision was very bad; I had scars and very advanced Keratoconus in my left eye.
Dr. Gulani is a very good doctor and gave me lots of confidence. He performed my very difficult surgery and was able to insert the INTAC rings in my cornea even though my eye was very complicated.

I feel like a Million dollars !!!!!

Thank you Dr.Gulani
